Canine Vaccination Protocol and Testing

Rabies - There are 1 and 3 year rabies vaccinations. The 1 and 3 year vaccinations are different therefore you must specify which vaccine you would like us to give to your pet.

DHLPP or DA2LPP - This is a 6-in-1 vaccination that protects against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis (two types), parainfluenza and parvo virus. The Doctor may choose to give this vaccination without leptospirosis. This vaccine is boosted 3 times during the puppy series of vaccinations; we will then boost the vaccine along with any other annual vaccinations at approximately 16 months. Beyond that, this vaccination will be required every 3 years.
Bordetella - Is a vaccination that protects against a Bordetella infection. Bordetella is not the only cause for upper respiratory infection; there are other bacterial and viral infections from which this vaccine will not protect. The best analogy we can make is that, you can get a flu shot but this does not mean you will not get a cold. This vaccine should be given if your pet is at risk of exposure I.E. boarding, dog parks, grooming etc.

Lyme  - This vaccine is given to protect against Lyme disease which is transmitted via deer ticks. We recommend that any pets traveling north get this vaccination. The initial vaccination will have to be boosted 3 weeks after it is administered, then given annually.

Heartworm Test - we require that your dog be tested for heartworm annually beyond the age of 7 months for for more information see the "heartworm prevention" section. The heartworm test that we run also includes a mini chemistry panel which looks at Glucose - blood sugar level, BUN - kidney, Creatinine - Kidney, ALT - liver and Total protein - liver, kidney.

Stool check - to detect any intestinal parasites which can be contracted by simply going on daily walks and ingesting the parasites by cleaning (licking) their feet.
Physical Exam - during the physical exam the Doctor is inspecting the following - ears, eyes, skin, teeth and gums, abdomen, heart, lungs and lymph nodes. The Doctor will also be asking general questions regarding behavior and habits. According to chapter 61G18-30.001(1)(y)(3) of the Florida administrative code the documented patient/client/veterinarian relationship cited in [F.S.] 474.214 is defined as a veterinarian’s record of a client and which documents that the veterinarian has seen the animal in a professional capacity within a period of 12 months or less. If we do not have records in compliance with this code we can not dispense prescription medications this includes heartworm prevention.
