Feline Vaccination Protocol and Testing
Rabies - We have exclusively used Merial's "purevax" since 1998. This Rabies vaccine is the safest of its type.
FVRCP - This is a 3 in 1 vaccine that protects against: Panleukopenia(feline distemper), Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus, both upper respitory diseases. This vaccine is boosted 3 times during the kitten series of vaccinations; we will then boost the vaccine along with any other annual vaccinations at approximately 16 months. Beyond that, this vaccination will be required every 3 years.
FELV- This vaccine protects against feline Leukemia. We would administer this vaccine on an at risk basis. Cats that are receiving this vaccination for the first time should be tested for the disease prior to vaccination. The initial vaccination will have to be boosted 3 weeks after it is administered, then given annually if at risk of contracting Leukemia.
FIV - This vaccination is a fairly new vaccine that protects your cat from Feline immunodeficiency virus. We would administer this vaccination on an at risk basis. Prior to vaccination your cat must be tested and microchipped. We would then administer the first of 3 boosters then the vaccine wouid be given annually if at risk of contracting FIV.
FELV/FIV Testing - Your cat should be tested prior to being vaccinated for either of these diseases, or if their history is questionable. For more information on these diseases please visit:
Stool Check - to detect any intestinal parasites.
Physical Exam - during the physical exam, the doctor is inspecting the following - ears, eyes, skin, teeth and gums, abdomen, heart, lungs and lymph nodes. The doctor will also be asking general questions regarding behaviour and habits. According to chapter 61G18-30.001(1)(y)(3) of the Florida administrative code the documented patient/client/veterinarian relationship cited in [F.S.]474.214 is defined as a veterinarian's record of a client and which documents that the veterinarian has seen the animal in a professional capacity within a period of 12 months or less. If we do not have records in compliance with this code, we cannot dispense prescription medications.
